]]>The exhibition includes only the first two printmaking techniques, Woodcut and Etching.
On the occasion of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of Europe, the Hambis Municipal Printmaking Museum in Nicosia, presents an important exhibition of prints from its collection. The exhibition offers an overview of the two basic techniques of printmaking, woodcut and etching in Europe. The works have been selected based on the variety of periods in which they were created – from the 16th century to the present day – as well as the variety of themes. Emphasis is placed on presenting the different methods of the two techniques.
The aim of the exhibition is to highlight the creativity and inventiveness of printmakers in relation to painting. With the aim of highlighting the primary and essential role of Printmaking in the dissemination of images across all social spectrum, the exhibition presents both independent works and book illustrations, aimed at a wide audience. It also offers an overview of European artistic movements, with works by the great names in painting and printmaking. The exhibition, presents the many exchanges in the art world between European countries.
A brief history of the two techniques
Printmaking appeared in the West World in the early 15th century and contributed significantly to the dissemination of texts and images. Woodcut, the original form of printmaking, was based on engraved wooden blocks that could be easily printed along with the typographic elements. In this technique, only the raised, unengraved parts of the wood retain the ink and are imprinted on the paper, a process called Relief. The ability to reproduce works gave artists the opportunity to disseminate their designs to a wider audience.
From the 15th century onwards, woodcut began to compete with etchings. Engraving on metal plates, mainly copper, allowed for greater precision and detail, as metal is more durable and uniform than wood. In copperplate printmaking, ink is retained in the engraved lines, while the smooth areas are cleaned, a process called intaglio.
Although printmaking made great strides, it never gained the prestige of painting, as it struggles to fully render the nuances of light and color. However, many important artists were also printmakers, creating original works of high artistic value that brought art closer to the general public.

]]>Lefkosia: Thursday 5 March 2026 – Pallas Theatre, Pafos Gate, 20:30
With this special concert, the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra honours and celebrates the memory of Vicky Stylianou – an artist of remarkable musical contribution, both as a pianist and as an orchestrator. Having had the honour and joy of numerous collaborations with Vicky, the Orchestra holds in its heart many beautiful, vivid memories of her radiance as an artist and her warmth as a person.
Under the baton of the Orchestra’s Honourary Conductor Alkis Baltas, the concert will fittingly open with Maurice Ravel’s Pavane pour une infante défunte, an elegiac meditation of profound tenderness and lyrical beauty.
We are delighted to be joined on stage for the first time by Antonis Manias, one of the most distinguished Greek violists of his generation, as the soloist in Weber’s Andante and Rondo Ungarese for viola and orchestra. In this work the viola sings with warm lyricism in the Andante and dazzles with fiery, Hungarian-inspired rhythms in the exuberant Rondo Ungarese. The acclaimed violist will also perform Alkis Baltas’ Makbule for solo viola and orchestra, based on the well-known ‘rebetiko’ melody “Makbule” and dedicated to Antonis Manias.
Alan Hovhaness’s Symphony no. 6, “Celestial Gate” is a deeply spiritual and luminous work that unfolds as a vast, transcendent sonic meditation. The symphony blends ancient modal melodies, shimmering orchestral textures, and a sense of timeless ritual to evoke a mystical passage between the earthly and the divine.

]]>As one of the very few ultra races on the island, and likely the only one that lasts this long in both distance and time, CBU stands out as a unique test of human endurance.
Race Format:
– Runners start together and must complete a 6.706-kilometer loop within one hour.
– Those who finish early must wait at the start line until the next loop begins.
– No breaks or outside assistance are allowed during the loop, rest is only permitted between loops.
– As the race progresses, each loop becomes a grueling test of physical stamina and mental resilience.
– The event continues until only one runner remains.
The Challenge:
With no set finish line, the Cyprus Backyard Ultra is a true battle of pacing, recovery, and sheer determination. The last runner standing after all others have DNF’d (Did Not Finish) is crowned the winner.
Set against the stunning landscape of Oroklini, Larnaca, which combines breathtaking views of the sea from a hill, this race is not just about endurance, it’s about camaraderie, pushing boundaries, and creating memories that last a lifetime.
